" Great weekend. Perfect location and cottage. Enjoyed the walk to Otterton ( from the cottage) along the river. Lunch at the mill was excellent..."

The Garden Cottage

The cottage adjoins the owners house, High Knowle. The house is steeped in history. Originally built in 1926 for a member of the Huntley and Palmers biscuit family it later became the holiday cottage of Lord and Lady Cobham. Some of the shrubs originate from the Cobhams main residence of Hagley Hall in Worcestershire. Other owners included the McKeig-Jones (whose family home is now the Palace Hotel in Torquay). Mrs McKeig-Jones was a great friend of Agatha Christie (they were bridesmaids at each others wedding). Agatha Christie was a regular visitor to the house during this period.

A terrace for sitting out and barbecues is provided but guests are welcome to wander around the garden as they wish. The lounge has a comfortable sofa, an open fire (1st scuttle of fuel included, further fuel available locally) and a small dining table. There is a TV(digital) and DVD player with a small library of films. The kitchen has recently been modernised and is equipped to a high standard. The property is centrally heated (gas and electricity included) and upstairs is a power shower and separate WC.

We can offer advice and have have books detailing some of the activities available locally. From full day walks along the coastal path to drinking champagne and eating fish and chips on the beach as the sun sets, we have lots of ideas for lovely days out from the cottage.
